There seems to be a tug of war, to coin a phrase, over where to station one of the new nuclear aircraft carriers.
Politicians in Virginia want all to be stationed at Norfolk, VA, and politicians in Florida want one to replace the USS John F. Kennedy which was decommissioned from in Jacksonville, FL – Mayport Navy Base.
A government report, requested by Democrat congressmen in Virginia, released Tuesday is “critical of the Navy for not clearly explaining how it measured risks before proposing to move a Norfolk-based
carrier to Mayport Naval Station in Florida.”
Representative Glen Nye (D) in the Norfolk area and other legislators representing Hampton Roads have pushed Navy admirals and defense officials to provide a deep analysis that justifies their contention that a carrier needs to be relocated to Mayport.
In realistic terms – jobs and votes are the kicker.
Simple logic would seem to indicate that in national security strategic interest we do not want ALL of our aircraft carriers locked to one port.
But when was national security strategy a consideration in politics?
