GATES ASSESSMENTS OF TROUBLE SPOTS

by H. Thomas Hayden on August 25, 2010

SecDef Robert M. Gates has announced his assessment of world trouble spots.

Gates puts North Korea at the top of his list. He says that the ailing dictator’s son may be trying to win the military support and may have been respopnsible for the torpedo sinking of the South Korean frigate Cheonan.

Of course he listed Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and Iraq.

Gates said that he feels the U.S. turned its back on Pakistan after the Soviets left in 1989. He added that the Paks fear the same thing will happen after the U.S. leaves Afghanistan. He added that the Paks are hedging their bet for whom ever comes to power in Afghanistan.

What I found astonishing was no mention of any where in Latin America.

I would add Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia as a serious trouble spot.
