President Obama publicly acknowledged for the first time that U. S. military forces had taken “direct action” against groups affiliated with Al Qaeda in Somalia and Yemen.
It had been acknowledged by many sources in government that we had been using drone strikes against Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula in Yemen but now it looks like there is much more.
In a letter to Congress, Mr. Obama said American forces had engaged in “a limited number” of operations against members of the AQIP in Yemen, arguing that AQIP posed a terrorist threat to “the United States and our interests.”
This letter is reported to be the latest update to lawmakers under the War Powers Act about military operations around the world. There is a classified section of the letter to Congress.
A number of terrorist released form Guantanamo Bay prison were reported to have been traveling to Yemen to continue the war against the U.S. and joined AQIP.
And, some in WDC want to accelerate the Gitmo release of terrorist and enemy combatants?
